The Title Won’t Make a Good Manager, Trust and Learning Do

Do titles matter? Yes and no.

Team manager. Manager. Team leader. Senior Manager. They all look so pretty on your CV.

Yet, do they say anything about how competent you are? How well do you manage yourself and your teams? Probably not. The title does not mean you are good at anything.

A corporate ladder might give you that impression. But a different email signature does not magically grant you new skills. You work on them and care for them.

Corporate game

The corporate environment creates an illusion of growth. It plays with titles to give people the impression of career advancement. The duties are often not much different when you move from executive to senior executive.

Where is the growth?

The trick is related to money. With every title you collect, you gain some monetary reward. The reason is to keep you motivated. Yet, the corporate environment ignores intrinsic motivation. It is even more powerful than any employee of the month picture on the wall.
